Summer Box Office Highs and Lows

Blair StoverSummer blockbusters did not disappoint this year and neither did summer ticket sales. Blair Stover reports that summer ticket revenue in the North American continent totaled 4.71 billion dollars. This is only for the time period between the first weekend in May and Labor Day. Ticket sales increased 10.2 percent over the previous year during the same time period.

More people attended the movies this summer. Ticket sales rose 6.6 percent over last summer to nearly 573 million. The rest of the growth was contributed to the higher prices of tickets.

There are some other factors involved in the growth numbers. Hollywood crammed a larger number of big-budget movies into this summer. It is understandable since summer accounts for 40% of total box office revenues. This summer, studios released 23 films which cost 75 million dollars and more (sometimes much more). This is an increase of 53% over the same time period last year.

With all of the choices, audiences fragmented over a solid summer favorite. This left films such as “The Hangover Part III” and “The Wolverine” swaying when they should have been aces in the whole. The animated “Turbo” from DreamWorks Animation brought in one of the smallest totals in the history of the company.

The National Association of Theater Owners recognizes that this summer offered almost too much product. Although, overall, the association was quite pleased with the overall box office summer strength. The 4.71 billion dollars in total ticket sales this summer scored a new high mark in the industry.

What did you see this summer and what was your favorite?

VMAs and Miley Cyrus

The performance of Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s will be remembered for a long time, and certainly brought the pop singer no small amount of media attention. Blair Stover Hollywood has more on the story below.

Not long ago Miley Cyrus, a.k.a Hanna Montana, left everything that had to do with her Disney past behind, but this new bad girl image is finding mixed support with fans these days.

Miley took the stage to perform a live version of her newest popular single ‘We Cannot Stop’. The scenery was spectacular as Cyrus, a giant bear and lots of costumed bear dancers danced around the stage. The decor gave us a look into one of those spectacular performances that could’ve happened but the inevitable reared its ugly head. Robin Thicke came on stage to perform ‘Blurred Lines’ with Miley and combined the performance went from plausible to awful.

Many are finding offense in Miley’s performance, with her tan colored underwear and provocative bumping, grinding, and twerking throughout the routine. Thicke, however, was no better, singing mediocre at best and performance uninspired. With a Beetlejuice-esque suit, Thicke did little to impress.

Talk, however, continues to continue over this controversial performance indeed. While many are quick to point out Miley’s faults many argue that doing so without criticizing Thicke is indicative of a double standard.

So what are your thoughts on the entire affair? Was this artistic vision or was it perhaps just a ploy for more media attention from both? Let us know in the comments below!

Justin Bieber and Mally

Here at Blair Stover, we have been keeping up on the status of Justin Bieber’s monkey, Mally, who he had to leave in Germany after Bieber failed to provide the proper vaccination and import paperwork for the monkey when he arrived for his European tour in March.

At that time, it was reported that Bieber was given four weeks to return to Munich with the proper paperwork to release the monkey from quarantine. Authorities say that Bieber’s representation has reached out to the animal shelter that’s keeping Mally to ask if they know of a proper place to transfer the monkey for permanent care, as it seems that Bieber is no longer interested in keeping the monkey as a pet.

A spokesman for German customs reports the monkey will remain in the shelter until Bieber or Bieber’s attorney contacts customs directly. If Bieber wants to send Mally to a zoo, he will be responsible for the costs involved.

German authorities posted a public notice on July 30 urging Bieber to get in touch with them about an unpaid bill for his former pet. The notice states that Bieber has one week to pay 1,130 euros for the monkey’s care. If the bill goes unpaid, Bieber must pay the bill the next time he enters Germany. It’s reported that Bieber already owes Munich customs 5,000 euros on an unrelated matter.

The Bieber and Mally matter has caught worldwide attention, and has only added to the singer’s seemingly dissolving public image as a less-than-responsible figure.

Justin and Selena Back Together?

Could it really be that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are back together? The singer posted a picture of himself and Selena on Instagram. But is the picture a new one? Blair Stover has more on this story below.

When it comes to pictures, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez could very well be a couple again. They made their fans wait a long time for this day to come back around. Fans suffered when Justin and Selena split, left to watch as both singers tried to get over one another by going onto talk shows even making small skits about it.

Selena, however, has even been traveling to Justin’s tour spots. Shortly after they were allegedly seen smooching together, the rumor mill started churning. Fans looked forward to a reunion of the two and now they finally have it…or do they? Just because the picture of the two was posted on Instagram doesn’t necessarily mean the couple is back together, right?

We hate to break it to many, but the couple IS back together. Selena made it official that Justin is off the market – for now and there are plenty of stipulations.

When the Instagram pic came out in May, the two did not know where they were and they did not want the public in their business. They have an inseparable bond that is hard to get rid of, says close friends. It is going to be rough to have close moments and have the public not portray it as something else.

A Baby Named North West?

Who doesn’t like celebrity babies? We know we love ‘em here on Blair Stover Hollywood! Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have finally come up with a name for their daughter and it couldn’t be more unique.

With names like “Kal-el” and “Apple” having already made headlines years ago, the name “North West” seems almost plain. According to People Magazine, however, Kim and Kanye’s daughter is indeed named a cardinal direction and seems to be doing just fine.

Earlier this year, Kim had denied the name when talking with TV host Jay Leno. Kim, however, had hinted that her love of geography could make her lean towards the name “West Easton.” Seems Kim’s love hasn’t faded, as the name still fits within the original hinted at theme.

Kris Jenner was on the ABC morning show “The View” as a guest and chatted with presenter Barbara Walters about her grandchild. “I love the name North,” says the proud grandmother. She then tries to explain why her daughter chose the unusual name. The attempt, however, gets a little confusing. “Kim tells me that North is the highest power and that the North is their highest common point,” said the grandmother. “I think that’s very sweet.”

Kim and West were recently asked if they have considered the difficulties that might arise from the choice of name given to their daughter, like the ones later in school. While their answer was a resounding “Yes” many fans are indecisive about the name. What do you think of the name? Unique or too far out there?

George Lucas and JJ Abrams

The George Lucas Era is over and the JJ Abrams era has begun – at least when it comes to Star Wars. We’re fans of Abrams new Star Trek, and when we heard that Abrams was going to be involved with Star Wars we had to update all of you here at Blair Stover Hollywood about it.

Lucasfilm and Disney are still teaming up to make the picture but it is a brand new world on the horizon, especially for fans. One of the biggest questions that arise is what will Episode VII cover? What about VII and IX?

Many people are certainly excited to see an implementation of the Thrawn trilogy and numerous rumors are pointing at the popular trilogy as being the basis for Episode VII. After all, the trilogy is widely popular and widely accepted. Sure it must be the basis for the next installment.

According to E!Online, however, Lucasfilm has come out with an official statement regarding the matter, and the answer may disappoint many a fan.

“It’s a completely new story,” a source told E! Online.

In other words, forget the old “Star Wars” novels and forget the comics. Forget every little thing you might know about what happened to Luke Skywalker. According to sources, Episode VII will be unlike anything that you have ever read or seen from the vast “Star Wars” universe.

So what do you think? Were you hoping for the Thrawn trilogy or are you excited to see something new in the works in regards to the Star Wars fandom as a whole?

RDJ vs. Marvel

Sources close to “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. say he deserves about 25 times as much as Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans, and about ten times as much as Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson for his role in the Avengers 2. We can’t resist some good gossip here on Blair Stover Hollywood, so read on to find out what we’ve sussed out from the news.

You might have heard of the multi-million dollar deal that Robert Downey Jr. was able to negotiate for his involvement in The Avengers. The actor received $50 million dollars due to negotiations that gave him a percentage of profit sharing. This amount, however, is nothing compared to the amount that is currently wafting through the rumor mill for the sequel.

Robert Downey Jr. wants to play his major role in the Avengers 2 movie and the fourth part of Iron Man, yet wants to earn a bigger piece of the pie as well. With the franchise promising to deliver on projected, big numbers, RDJ is asking for higher pay to the tune of $100 million. In comparison, the current highest paid actor is a well-deserved Tom Cruise, thanks to the sensational success of Mission: Impossible and Ghost Protocol, making a good $75 million.

A good basis for Robert Downey Jr.’s $100 million offer is the box office results of Iron Man 3. The sales are currently over the $1 billion dollar mark. In such sums, giving $100 million to Robert Downey Jr. shouldn’t be a problem. Marvel, however, is notorious for slow negotiations and it is no surprise that deliberations are slow in happening.

One thing is certain, The Avengers 2 is set for April, 30 2015. Whether Robert Downey Jr. will play Tony Stark or if he will be replaced is still up in the air.

Who would you like to see play Iron Man should Marvel decline to sign on RDJ again?

Hathaway to Star in Adaption of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’

Anne Hathaway recently won a Golden Globe for her stunning role in Tom Hooper’s musical hit ‘Les Miserables.’ Hathaway is also regarded as a shoe-in for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscar’s next month.

Despite her recent busy schedule, it doesn’t seem that she will be taking much time off. Reports have come out that she is set to star in a modern interpretation of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’

‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays and has been adapted to the silver screen many times. The most recent film was ’10 Things I Hate About You’ in 1999.

Hathaway was supposed to star in Spielberg’s scifi- ‘Robopocalypse’ with Chris Hemsworth but that project has been postponed indefinitely. With that project on hold, Blair Stover believes that the production of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ may happen sooner than planned.

Lance Armstrong Admits to Using PED’s

For years, Lance Armstrong has denied and ridiculed those who have accused him of using performance enhancing drugs during his career in cycling.

Armstrong has now ended a decade of denial by confessing to using PED’s in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Confessing to using PED’s is a complete reversal for Armstrong after years of publicly denying the use through statements and interviews to protect his reputation.

Prior to his interview with Oprah, Armstrong made an emotional apology to the Livestrong charity that he founded after his battle with testicular cancer. Armstrong and many members of the organization were in tears after his speech when he urged them to continue their efforts in helping cancer patients.

In the past few years Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, lost his endorsements and was forced to leave his foundation. All of this came after many of his fellow teammates testified that Armstrong has used PED ‘s in a lengthy USDA report. Armstrong has been barred from competing in the elite triathlon, any running evcents and has a lifetime ban in cycling.

Many considered Armstrong a hero for winning seven consecutive Tour de France titles after his long battle with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain. Blair Stover believes that Lance Armstrong’s reputation will never fully recover after this dramatic confession.

Patrick Dempsey Saves Tully’s Coffee

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Doctor McDreamy has stepped in and saved Seattle-based coffee business Tully’s.

Patrick Dempsey has recently put in a bid against coffee super giant Starbucks to help save Tully’s which has gone bankrupt. The bid was approved by a federal judge this past week.

Patrick said in a statement, “I’ve been deeply humbled by the outpouring of support from the city of Seattle and am very proud to be a new business owner in this amazing city. We have a lot to accomplish over the next few months and years, and I am excited to now call Seattle my second home.”

While Dempsey has already made a major influence in Seattle with his role in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Blair Stover thinks it’s wonderful that he is using his celebrity influence to benefit a Seattle-based company.
