Irish Movies, Irish Stars and Irish Awards–The Irish Oscars!

March 15, 2014

Blair StoverIt’s March, which means Academy Awards, but today, why not take a completely different approach and give a nod to another great March event—St. Patrick’s Day—and talk about movies with great Irish characters? Combining the idea of the Oscars with Irish film, here is a list of my personal favorite movies with Irish themes or Irish actors and why I like them.

Best “Serious” Irish Movie: Dancing at Lughnasa

To start with, it features Meryl Streep, but that is not really the best thing about this movie. Dancing at Lughnasa was a play before it was a movie and both do a wonderful job of portraying a segment of the human experience we might never think about. Five unmarried Irish sisters deal with singleness, illegitimacy, raising a child and the start of World War II in this beautiful film that is not only “arty” but also has a good story line. Michael Gambon, Sophie Thompson and an all-star cast head up this scintillating film.

Best “Action” Irish Movie: The Boondock Saints

If you don’t like bad language and blood, this movie is not for you. On the other hand, if you love action, you cannot miss it! The Boondock Saints is a cool movie because it was never really supposed to happen. The film was slated for the dustbin when it was rescued and turned into a direct-to-video cult phenomenon. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus and the incomparable Willem Dafoe, the movie generated a great deal of controversy and stands out as unique in the annals of “good guy vs. bad guy” films.

Best “Kids” Irish Movie: The Secret of Kells

Kids and adults will enjoy the breathtaking animation as well as learn something about the history of Ireland. This is the story of the famed Book of Kells, the Irish illuminated manuscript that highlights the beauty of ancient monastic art. Starring the voice talents of Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney, this movie is one you can enjoy with the entire family.

Best Irish Actor: Liam Neeson

Since his roles as the protagonist in Ethan Frome and as Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List, we all knew Liam Neeson was something special. His latest films have only served to support that belief. He is probably one of the most versatile actors on the screen today and consistently shows his talents by taking on “stretch” roles, although he can still play a good tough guy when he wants to!

Best Irish Actress: Maureen O’Hara

Sure, we are going back a few years, but Maureen O’Hara, the beautiful redhead from Miracle on 34th Street and The Quiet Man opposite John Wayne, deserves the crown for most entrancing Irish actress. Maureen epitomized the Hollywood starlet but managed to get her teeth into some really good roles, as well!

That is my take on the Irish Oscars—Erin go braugh!

The History of The Oscars

March 1, 2014

Blair StoverThe 86th annual Academy Awards, popularly known as the “Oscars,” was held recently, with 12 Years a Slave winning “Best Picture,” Matthew McConaughey named “Best Actor” and Cate Blanchett named “Best Actress.” While most of us at least nod in the direction of the Oscars each year and a few of us are glued to our sets, few people really know the history of the Academy Awards or how they came to be. Since they have been going strong now for 86 years, perhaps it is time to educate ourselves about this fascinating American film staple.

The Beginnings

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927 as a way to promote harmony between film studios and unions. Today, the Academy has grown to promote excellence in the film industry. The academy is composed of 6,000 filmmakers from the United States and around the world, and routinely gives money in the form of scholarships and other financial incentives to upcoming filmmakers.

The first Oscar awards were given on May 16, 1929, to 15 people who achieved special things in the motion picture industry. The ceremony lasted approximately 15 minutes, and the winners had been announced in advance to the media. Clearly, the very first awards from the Academy were quite different from those of today!

How The Oscars Are Decided

Most people have voiced, at some point or another, disappointment with the Oscar choices in one category or another. There are currently 24 awards given, covering many of the aspects of the film industry. There are also five special categories for awards in chosen areas. A film must be a feature film of at least 40 minutes and must have opened no earlier than January 1 of the previous year in order to qualify for consideration.

Some people claim that the Oscars are simply a money-maker for the film industry. Others complain that the voting representatives either pay too little attention to critically-acclaimed films or focus on “artsy” films that the public does not like. Further, some actors have refused to accept their Oscar awards because of various personal or political beliefs. However, the Oscars continues to fascinate most of us and will probably do so for the future, as well. Ultimately, the Oscars represent a snapshot of the film culture at any given time in American history.

R.I.P. Paul Walker

December 9, 2013

Paul Walker was found dead this past Saturday as a result of a car accident. The protagonist of the film series ‘Fast & Furious’ was headed to a charity event in California when the car he was in crashed.

According to police reports, Walker’s friend, Roger Rhodes, was at the wheel and was responsible for the crash. The LAPD ruled out that they were participating in an unlawful race, however many experts say the Porsche Carrera GT is very popular in illegal street racing – one of the world’s most dangerous sports.

Paul Walker, the 40-year-old Californian actor, rose to worldwide fame for playing Brian O’Conner in the movie saga “The Fast & Furious.” His death shocked the whole team in the series immensely. James Wan, the director of the film, was completely devastated by the news. Vin Diesel, usually a man of many words, couldn’t muster many about the death of his friend. Other stars took to Twitter to express their sympathies, as well.

The cause of the accident is still not clear. What is clear is that Rhodes was traveling at a high rate of speed. Media images have been posted where you can see that the car was not only was completely destroyed, but also swept away three lampposts before ending up crashing into a tree. It is unknown if the impact took the lives of the two or if it was the fire. One thing is sure, the world lost another great actor and human being on Saturday.

We’re big Paul Walker and ‘Fast and Furious’ fans here at Blair Stover, and Paul is already sorely missed! Tell us your favorite Paul Walker moment below.

The eccentric and controversial Lady Gaga has worked her way into the lovable house of the cute and cuddly Muppets.  The star will sing in a special program that will air on Thanksgiving Day in the United States. The U.S. network ABC is especially looking forward to the peculiar superstar which combines a heterogeneous mixture with a super special day. Blair Stover has more of this story below.

The program, which will run for 90 minutes, airs the night of November 28 (Thanksgiving Day in the United States). Lagy Gaga will sing all the new songs from her new album “Artpop,” which will be released on November 11th. The singer, upon hearing the news, did not hesitate to show her happiness.

“When ABC called me, I was really excited,” she confessed. “I knew it would be a night full of laughter and memories. I cannot wait to see them… and I hope that Miss Piggy does not go crazy.”

The Muppets themselves are surprised, as well.

“What an incredible opportunity! We do not even care if Miss Gaga confuses some of the Muppets with pieces of her wardrobe again,” said Kermit the Frog.

Jonas Brothers Cancel Tour, Delete Twitter

Rumor has it that the three brothers could be about to end their musical careers as a group due to disagreements between them. This could have been the reason they deleted their Twitter account and cancelled their tour in the past few weeks. After years and years of successful tours, combined with multiple platinum records, the rumors are flying around about why the band is calling it quits. Blair Stover has more details below.

These rumors about the disintegration of the band formed by brothers Kevin Jonas, Joe and Nick have done nothing to counter any type of response, especially after their official Twitter account was deleted. Their Twitter page shows the “Sorry, the page does not exist” error when any user tries to access the virtual profile of the trio.

Though the group’s U.S. tour was scheduled to start on Friday in Philadelphia, the three artists finally decided to cancel the performance on problems stemming from arguing about the musical choices regarding the style of music the band plays.

“There is a deep division in the group. They disagree on the direction on the musical style,” said Jesse Derris, a spokesman for the Jonas Brothers, to the website HollywoodLife.com.

In spite of the disagreements between the three brothers, none of them want to take this issue to a personal level, so they are trying to reach an agreement to continue their career together.

“It is not a personal problem, but rather a musical one. After all, they are brothers and want the same thing and therefore, are trying to settle their differences,” said Derris.

Will you be sad to see the Jonas Brothers go, should the disagreements become irreconcilable?

VMAs and Miley Cyrus

The performance of Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s will be remembered for a long time, and certainly brought the pop singer no small amount of media attention. Blair Stover Hollywood has more on the story below.

Not long ago Miley Cyrus, a.k.a Hanna Montana, left everything that had to do with her Disney past behind, but this new bad girl image is finding mixed support with fans these days.

Miley took the stage to perform a live version of her newest popular single ‘We Cannot Stop’. The scenery was spectacular as Cyrus, a giant bear and lots of costumed bear dancers danced around the stage. The decor gave us a look into one of those spectacular performances that could’ve happened but the inevitable reared its ugly head. Robin Thicke came on stage to perform ‘Blurred Lines’ with Miley and combined the performance went from plausible to awful.

Many are finding offense in Miley’s performance, with her tan colored underwear and provocative bumping, grinding, and twerking throughout the routine. Thicke, however, was no better, singing mediocre at best and performance uninspired. With a Beetlejuice-esque suit, Thicke did little to impress.

Talk, however, continues to continue over this controversial performance indeed. While many are quick to point out Miley’s faults many argue that doing so without criticizing Thicke is indicative of a double standard.

So what are your thoughts on the entire affair? Was this artistic vision or was it perhaps just a ploy for more media attention from both? Let us know in the comments below!

Justin Bieber and Mally

August 9, 2013

Here at Blair Stover, we have been keeping up on the status of Justin Bieber’s monkey, Mally, who he had to leave in Germany after Bieber failed to provide the proper vaccination and import paperwork for the monkey when he arrived for his European tour in March.

At that time, it was reported that Bieber was given four weeks to return to Munich with the proper paperwork to release the monkey from quarantine. Authorities say that Bieber’s representation has reached out to the animal shelter that’s keeping Mally to ask if they know of a proper place to transfer the monkey for permanent care, as it seems that Bieber is no longer interested in keeping the monkey as a pet.

A spokesman for German customs reports the monkey will remain in the shelter until Bieber or Bieber’s attorney contacts customs directly. If Bieber wants to send Mally to a zoo, he will be responsible for the costs involved.

German authorities posted a public notice on July 30 urging Bieber to get in touch with them about an unpaid bill for his former pet. The notice states that Bieber has one week to pay 1,130 euros for the monkey’s care. If the bill goes unpaid, Bieber must pay the bill the next time he enters Germany. It’s reported that Bieber already owes Munich customs 5,000 euros on an unrelated matter.

The Bieber and Mally matter has caught worldwide attention, and has only added to the singer’s seemingly dissolving public image as a less-than-responsible figure.

Justin and Selena Back Together?

Could it really be that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are back together? The singer posted a picture of himself and Selena on Instagram. But is the picture a new one? Blair Stover has more on this story below.

When it comes to pictures, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez could very well be a couple again. They made their fans wait a long time for this day to come back around. Fans suffered when Justin and Selena split, left to watch as both singers tried to get over one another by going onto talk shows even making small skits about it.

Selena, however, has even been traveling to Justin’s tour spots. Shortly after they were allegedly seen smooching together, the rumor mill started churning. Fans looked forward to a reunion of the two and now they finally have it…or do they? Just because the picture of the two was posted on Instagram doesn’t necessarily mean the couple is back together, right?

We hate to break it to many, but the couple IS back together. Selena made it official that Justin is off the market – for now and there are plenty of stipulations.

When the Instagram pic came out in May, the two did not know where they were and they did not want the public in their business. They have an inseparable bond that is hard to get rid of, says close friends. It is going to be rough to have close moments and have the public not portray it as something else.

A Baby Named North West?

Who doesn’t like celebrity babies? We know we love ‘em here on Blair Stover Hollywood! Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have finally come up with a name for their daughter and it couldn’t be more unique.

With names like “Kal-el” and “Apple” having already made headlines years ago, the name “North West” seems almost plain. According to People Magazine, however, Kim and Kanye’s daughter is indeed named a cardinal direction and seems to be doing just fine.

Earlier this year, Kim had denied the name when talking with TV host Jay Leno. Kim, however, had hinted that her love of geography could make her lean towards the name “West Easton.” Seems Kim’s love hasn’t faded, as the name still fits within the original hinted at theme.

Kris Jenner was on the ABC morning show “The View” as a guest and chatted with presenter Barbara Walters about her grandchild. “I love the name North,” says the proud grandmother. She then tries to explain why her daughter chose the unusual name. The attempt, however, gets a little confusing. “Kim tells me that North is the highest power and that the North is their highest common point,” said the grandmother. “I think that’s very sweet.”

Kim and West were recently asked if they have considered the difficulties that might arise from the choice of name given to their daughter, like the ones later in school. While their answer was a resounding “Yes” many fans are indecisive about the name. What do you think of the name? Unique or too far out there?

RDJ vs. Marvel

Sources close to “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. say he deserves about 25 times as much as Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans, and about ten times as much as Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson for his role in the Avengers 2. We can’t resist some good gossip here on Blair Stover Hollywood, so read on to find out what we’ve sussed out from the news.

You might have heard of the multi-million dollar deal that Robert Downey Jr. was able to negotiate for his involvement in The Avengers. The actor received $50 million dollars due to negotiations that gave him a percentage of profit sharing. This amount, however, is nothing compared to the amount that is currently wafting through the rumor mill for the sequel.

Robert Downey Jr. wants to play his major role in the Avengers 2 movie and the fourth part of Iron Man, yet wants to earn a bigger piece of the pie as well. With the franchise promising to deliver on projected, big numbers, RDJ is asking for higher pay to the tune of $100 million. In comparison, the current highest paid actor is a well-deserved Tom Cruise, thanks to the sensational success of Mission: Impossible and Ghost Protocol, making a good $75 million.

A good basis for Robert Downey Jr.’s $100 million offer is the box office results of Iron Man 3. The sales are currently over the $1 billion dollar mark. In such sums, giving $100 million to Robert Downey Jr. shouldn’t be a problem. Marvel, however, is notorious for slow negotiations and it is no surprise that deliberations are slow in happening.

One thing is certain, The Avengers 2 is set for April, 30 2015. Whether Robert Downey Jr. will play Tony Stark or if he will be replaced is still up in the air.

Who would you like to see play Iron Man should Marvel decline to sign on RDJ again?
